Why are some medications only available with a prescription?
Most medications require a veterinarian’s approval and often a prescription. For example, your dog needs an exam before taking a heartworm pill to find out if they already infected. Preventative medicines don’t kill adult heartworms, and an untreated infection can be deadly. Also, if your pet is taking other medications, there could be a reaction. Your vet wants to make sure that any medication you give your pet is safe.
